Effect of soil management on the white grub population and damage in soybean PAB
OLIVEIRA,LENITA JACOB; HOFFMANN-CAMPO,CLARA BEATRIZ; GARCIA,MARIA ALICE.
To evaluate the effect of soil management systems on population of white grubs, (Phyllophaga cuyabana Moser), and on its damage in soybean, experiments were set up under no-tillage and conventional tillage (one disk plow, and a leveling disk harrow) areas. Primary tillage equipment, used in other soil management systems, such as moldboard plow, disk plow, chisel plow and heavy duty disk harrow were also tested. Fluctuation of P. cuyabana population and the extent of its damage to soybean was similar under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems. Results comparing a range of primary tillage equipment showed that it affected soil insect populations differently, depending on the time during the season in which tillage was executed. Larval mortality could...

Eficiência de armadilhas com feromônio de agregação e cana-de-açúcar na captura de Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.) Anais da SEB
Tiglia,Esmilda A.; Vilela,Evaldo F.; Moura,José I. L.; Anjos,Norivaldo.

Elytra colour polymorphism and randomness of matings in Chauliognathus fallax Germar 1824 from southern Brazil (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Machado,Vilmar; Araújo,Aldo Mellender de.
Beetles of the species Chauliognathus fallax Germar 1824 are polymorphic for elytron colouration with six morphs distinguished on the basis of black pigmentation on a yellow background. We investigated samples of C. fallax taken in eight consecutive weeks aiming to determine the frequency of the morphs which were grouped, for statistical analysis, into three classes according to elytra pigmentation as well as the possible occurrence of assortative mating. Our results showed a variation in the frequency of the classes throughout the season, both in males and females, with the maximum frequency of each class at the fourth and fifth week. The three classes (A, B, C) showed the same pattern of variation, and class B was always the more frequent. To test...

Ergänzungen zur Staphylinidenfauna der Niederlande 1 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) Naturalis
Sterrenburg, F.C.F.; Schülke, M..
Additions to the Staphylinidae fauna of the Netherlands 1 From a total of over 14.000 Staphylinidae, collected in The Netherlands and belonging to the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum at Leiden, the more interesting species were selected for further faunistic study. These species were, according to the last available comprehensive data (Everts, 1922a) either known as rare, non-indigenous or, in one case, as common. This selection was completed by data from other museums, private collections and literature in which way an upto-date review of the occurrence and distribution of these Staphylinidae can be presented. As the data extend over a period of a century, where possible, an attempt has been made to assess changes in the faunistic status. Two species...

Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Hopp,Philipp Werner; Caron,Edilson; Ottermanns,Richard; Roß-Nickoll,Martina.
Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil. To evaluate the reliability of data obtained by Winkler extraction in Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil, we studied litter beetle assemblages in secondary forests (5 to 55 years after abandonment) and old-growth forests at two seasonally different points in time. For all regeneration stages, species density and abundance were lower in April compared to August; but, assemblage composition of the corresponding forest stages was similar in both months. We suggest that sampling of small litter inhabiting beetles at different points in time using the Winkler technique reveals identical ecological patterns, which are more likely to be influenced...

Feeding and arrestment responses of Diabrotica speciosa to cucurbitacin-content formulations PAB
Arruda,Iara Cintra; Ventura,Maurício Ursi; Scarminio,Ieda Spacino.
The objective of this work was to evaluate arrestant and stimulant feeding effects on Diabrotica speciosa (Ger.), using cucurbitacin-content starch-based formulations prepared with varying starch sources, and adding potassium lignate. In a glass slide assay, the wash off resistance of formulations was compared. Potassium lignate did not improve wash off resistance. Lagenaria vulgaris L. powder, in which cucurbitacin B concentration was determined as 0.28%, was added to the most adhesive formulation. The resultant material was used in a two-choice assay in which leaves of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., treated with concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% were offered to insects together with untreated control leaves. Greater number of insects and...

First record in Argentina of a plant-insect association, with interest in biological control Ecología austral
Turienzo,Paola.
The species Chrysolina quadrigemina (Suffrian) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is recorded for the first time in Argentina, this being also the first record of this genus in the country. Its host plant, Hypericum perforatum L. (Clusiaceae) is native from Asia, Europe and Africa, and has behaved as a strong invader in several countries of the world where the implementation of a biological control program was necessary. The only country in South America that implemented such a control was Chile, in 1953. The arrival of C. quadrigemina to southern Argentina is probably due to natural dispersion from Chile. This record increases the number of Chrysomelidae species in the country.

First record of Braconidae as parasitoids of Capnodis tenebrionis (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), with notes on the ecology of Spathius erythrocephalus Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Naturalis
Bonsignore, C.P.; Achterberg, C. van; Vacante, V..
For the first time an ichneumonoid parasitoid is reported from the peach flatheaded rootborer Capnodis tenebrionis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in a heavily infested plum and apricot orchard in south-western Sicily. In 2005 and 2006 the ecology of the ectoparasitoid Spathius erythrocephalus Wesmael, 1838, (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied. The larvae are ectophagous and gregarious; obviously the parasitoid search for the large buprestid larval (6.0 ± 0.4 cm). The adult parasitoid appeared in both cultivations in August and/or September and selected only the mature larvae for oviposition. In 2006 35% of the rootborer larvae on plum were parasitized. Significant diff erences were found between the mean depth in the soil in which parasitized...

Floral biology of Tropaeolum majus L. (Tropaeolaceae) and its relation with Astylus variegatus activity (Germar 1824) (Coleoptera: Melyridae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Maria Emilia P.F.; Mussury,Rosilda M.; Vieira,Maria do Carmo; Alves Junior,Valter V.; Pereira,Zefa V.; Scalon,Silvana P.Q..
Tropaeolum majus L. (nasturtium) is a culture popularly known by its medicinal, ornamental and culinary utility. This work aimed to evaluate the interaction between Astylus variegatus (Germar 1824) (Coleoptera: Melyridae) and the nasturtium flowers associated to the weeks of flourishing, in order to conceive the floral mechanims used by the species to attract A. variegatus. The insects collection was achieved with an entomologic net by the sweeping method, during the weekly flowering, at two hours, from 7am to 5pm. The studies of floral biology were carried out in twenty flowers by the analysis of measures and the arrangement of the floral parts. The nasturtium flower offers pollen and nectar to the insect as a compensation. However, it was observed that...
